Budapest Mayor István Tarlos yesterday discussed plans to renovate the Chain Bridge (Lánchíd) and the busy junction of Blaha Lujza tér in central Budapest. 

Speaking at an AmCham event yesterday, Tarlós said other plans for upgrades included the Buda Castle tunnel and the cog-wheel railway in the Buda hills, which would be extended to Széll Kálman tér in one direction and up to Normafa Hill in the other.

The Chain Bridge and tunnel reconstruction would cost HUF 18 billion, the cog-wheel line extension HUF 23 bln and Blaha Lujza tér renovation HUF 1.5 bln, he said.

Tarlós said the Municipal Council had already received a loan from the European Investment Bank for the upgrades, with approval from the central government. Another EU-supported investment would entail the building of a new waste management and sludge incinerator in the city, he added.
